Does Israeli democracy, as it has evolved over its 75 years of existence,
indeed grant social rights to the entire population, while recognizing the
equality and full representation of every individual? The diverse
literature, poetry and art presented in this volume of “HaKivun Mizrach”
(East Word Literary and artistic journal) reveal the points of fracture in
the assumption that the struggle for democracy is merely a response to
a governmental coup; rather, it also endeavors to rectify inequality and
fulfill what is lacking. The poems, stories, artworks, and thought-
provoking essays provide a platform for the myriad voices and diverse
communities in Israeli society that are fighting for democracy.
